The ADF Archives, under the direction of Dean Jeffrey, serves as a repository for film, video, photographs, and other records of enduring historical value created by the Festival. The Archives preserves its records for use by the dance community, including students, teachers, scholars, and the general public. Through the ongoing development of its resources, providing access to its collections, and participating in the dance archives community, the Archives encourage research and scholarship on the historical, cultural, and international significance of modern dance. In all its activities, the Archives supports and furthers ADF's commitment to the creation and preservation of the art form.

Videos of performances are made available to the public in Duke University's Lilly Library and at other libraries through interlibrary loan.

Aside from festival materials, the Archives also collects videos, photos, audiotapes, and personal papers created by other individuals and institutions pertaining to modern dance. ADF holdings include the papers of choreographers Pearl Primus and Laura Dean and the records of the Harper Theater Dance Festival and the Emmy Award-winning documentary Free to Dance: The African-American Presence in Modern Dance, which aired on PBS' Great Performances: Dance in America in 2001.
