In recognition of his accomplishments as a choreographer, the 2009 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award of $50,000 was presented to Ohad Naharin by Sebastian Scripps, son of the late ADF benefactor Samuel H. Scripps, immediately prior to the presentation of Naharin’s Decadance by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet on June 25, 2009. ADF Director Charles L. Reinhart, Co-Director Jodee Nimerichter, and Wendy Scripps also spoke of Naharin’s contributions to the modern dance world. The Samuel H. A joyous ADF community honored Carolyn Adams, Ruth Andrien, and Sharon Kinney with the 19th annual Balasaraswati/Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching. The contributions of all three recipients helped to shape and form a generation of modern dancers. “Within the shared language of Paul Taylor’s early choreography, these three remarkable women set their careers in motion. They continue to find new and important ways to leave their own impressions on our dancing landscape,” stated ADF Dean Donna Faye Burchfield. Others offering moving remarks included Wendy Scripps, Sebastian Scripps, Linda Tarnay, and Robert Battle. The Chair, established in 1991, recognizes the dual role of teachers passing on dance history and tradition, and guarantees the future creativity of the art form. It is endowed through a generous contribution from Luise Elcaness Scripps with additional support by Walker Beinecke, the daughters of Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke, and the ADF. |
