Application Requirements

  1. Online application form 
  2. $40 non-refundable application fee (not credited toward tuition)
  3. Demonstration of dance skill level via live or video audition

Students will not be assessed for admission until all application requirements are received by the ADF office. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. 

AUDITION, instructor assessment, and personal statement Details

There is no benefit to attending an ADF audition class live versus submitting a video.  All students will be considered equally, and both live classes and video submissions require students to demonstrate modern technique, ballet technique (or another form of their choice), and creativity and performance (via performance of a 1-minute self-choreographed solo or improvisation).  

VIDEO AUDITION

  • Technique: 
    • For the technique portion, note that all exercises should be performed only on one side and only once.
    • Up to 2 minutes of modern technique. Please be sure to include: floor work, exercises for spine and torso, legwork, a traveling phrase, and a short center phrase with qualitative shifts and dynamic range.
    • Up to 2 minutes of ballet technique. Ballet work should include: barre work, one short adagio; one waltz or traveling phrase; and one exercise featuring small, medium, and large jumps. NOTE: If you have no prior experience with ballet, substitute up to 2 minutes of African or hip hop. If you have no experience with any of these techniques, you will not fulfill this portion of the audition. This will not preclude you from being considered for the 3WS.
  • Creative work: 
    • 1 minute of improvisation or performance of something you choreographed. This section MUST be self-choreographed or improvised.  Performance of another artist’s work is not permitted.  Please indicate whether you are improvising or performing your choreography.   
  • How to submit a video audition: 
    • DVDs must be mailed to: ADF School, Box 90772, Durham, NC 27708
    • Online links must be emailed to forms@americandancefestival.org. Passwords must be provided for private links. 
    • Please label the DVD or online link clearly with the student’s name and ADF program.
    • ADF will only accept 1 DVD or 1 video link per person.
    • Applicant should be the only person in the video, please do not send videos of applicant in a class orperformance with other dancers.

live audition REQUIREMENTS:

  • Before the audition: All students must submit a 3WS application before the audition begins. ADF HIGHLY ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO FILL OUT THE APPLICATION PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT THE AUDITION. This will make the check in process easier for everyone!
  • At the audition: Arrive early! Check in will usually begin approximately 30 minutes before the audition. At check in, students will need to fill out an online application if not previously completed (using their own smartphone, tablet, or laptop; limited tablets will be available), pay the $40 application fee, and obtain an audition number. 
  • Please note that class will not include a thorough warm-up; students should come prepared to move fully from the start of class.  
  • The class will include exercises in modern technique, ballet technique, and team-based creative problem-solving.  Following this portion of the class, students will be asked to perform a one-minute solo. The solo can be choreographed by the student or improvised. A stereo with an mp3 hookup be provided.  
  • After the audition: Following the solos, there will be an information session about the ADF School where students can ask questions and find out more details about the Three Week School.

Instructor assessment

A current dance teacher must fill out the Instructor Assessment form. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the assessment is submitted for a complete application package.

Personal statement guidelines

All students must submit a personal statement. The first priority for us is the we hear your voice and your ideas.  Perfect grammar and sentence structure are less important than knowing that what you write comes from the heart!  Please answer each of the following questions in your statement.
  • What is most exciting to you about dancing and why do you want to come to the 3WS?
  • What are the three most important personal habits and attitudes that you believe are necessary to create a team that you want to belong to?
  • What’s a goal that you want to accomplish during your time at ADF? Be specific! For instance, instead of saying that you want to become a better dancer, identify what you believe will contribute to making you a better dancer. It could be: working on your ability to improvise; learning from other dancers by watching them in class; taking the risk to dance full out even when you aren’t sure of all the steps; or many, many other things!

Scholarships

Tuition Scholarships

There are a limited number of partial tuition scholarships available for the Three Week School. Scholarship awards are determined based on talent/merit plus demonstration of financial need. Scholarship students will still be responsible for the remaining balance of tuition, travel, and room and board costs. Students who would like to be considered for scholarships must complete an additional two steps:

  1. Indicate scholarship interest on the ADF application
  2. Submit a copy of your parents 2016 Tax Form 1040 (first page only), via:

Matching Scholarships

The ADF will match up to $500 from sponsoring organizations and businesses. Sponsorships may come from:

  • Dance Studio
  • College or University
  • High School
  • Arts Organization
  • Business or Corporation

Details:

  • Matching scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Only a limited number are available. 
  • Matching scholarships cannot be combined with any other ADF scholarships. 
  • ADF will only match a maximum amount of $500, but there is no limit for sponsorship award amounts. For example, your school’s dance department can award you $1,000 towards tuition, and ADF will match $500, bringing your total matching scholarship to $1,500. However, if your school only awarded $100, ADF would match $100, bringing your total matching scholarship to $200. 
  • Matching Scholarships may only be used to towards ADF tuition fees. 
  • Matching scholarship awards are contingent upon sponsorship agreement. Matching scholarships from ADF will not be allocated until the school office receives sponsorship agreement and funds. Students are strongly encouraged to reach out to their possible sponsors EARLY, before indicating interest in the matching scholarship to ADF.

Payment Instructions

  • ADF accepts the following forms of payment:
    • All major credit/debit cards
    • Personal checks
    • Bank check, certified check, or cashier check
    • Money order
  • Checks should be made out to “ADF” or “American Dance Festival” and mailed to ADF School, Box 90772, Durham, NC 27708
  • Upon acceptance to the ADF, students will be mailed a statement of charges along with an information packet.
  • Within 21 days of this acceptance, a non-refundable $300 tuition deposit is due (part of the overall tuition cost).
  • All student accounts must be paid in full by the deadline. Payments must be received or postmarked by this date. 
  • Payment after the deadline requires special arrangements with the ADF School office.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY PAYMENTS MADE IN PERSON, OVER THE PHONE, OR BY CHECK MAY NOT APPEAR IN YOUR ADF ONLINE ACCOUNT. SCHOLARSHIPS MAY ALSO NOT SHOW UP IN ALL ONLINE ACCOUNTS. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL THE ADF OFFICE FOR UPDATED ACCOUNT INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING A PAYMENT. 

REFUND POLICY

Withdrawal
 (Accepted students)

  • Summer 2017:
    • May 15, 2017: All paid tuition (less the $300 deposit), dorm room fees, and meal plan fees will be refunded in full only if written notice of withdrawal is received on or before this date.
    • May 16–July 8, 2017: Tuition (less the $300 deposit) will be refunded for medical reasons only. A signed note from a doctor is required. Dorm room fees and meal plan will be refunded in full.
    • After July 8, 2017: Tuition and meal plans will not be refunded for any reason. Prorated dorm room fees will be refunded by December 2017 if a student leaves the festival early, based on the date that a student’s room key is returned.
  • All withdrawals will incur a $40 withdraw fee.

Withdrawal (Students not accepted into the program)

  • Students not accepted into the Three Week School will be refunded all tuition, dorm, meal, and any additional fees paid towards the program. The only non-refundable fee for students not accepted is the $40 application fee. 
  • Refunds for students not accepted into the Three Week School will be issued within two weeks of admittance notification. 

Refund Issue Dates

  • Summer 2017: ADF refunds for accepted/enrolled students will be issued no earlier than July 15, 2017. Duke refunds for dorm damage and key deposits will be refunded by December 2017, after the ADF receives final billing from Duke University.

Summer 2017 3WS tuition includes the cost of all classes, tickets to Reynolds Industries Theater and Durham Performing Arts Center performances during the three weeks, special clothing for the dances of West Africa class, and extra curricular activities.

Please note:

  • The application fee and tuition are required fees. All dorm residents must purchase the Housing and Meals fee, and Commuter students are required to purchase the Commuter Lunch Meal Plan. Certain fees will be required depending on student’s location as well as housing and personal preferences.           
  • Dorm rooms cannot be guaranteed unless paid by May 1, 2017.
  • All housing and meal plan prices are approximate and subject to minor revision, pending notice from Duke University.
