Dance Theater Camp (ages 8-12)

This summer, children ages 8–12 are invited to dance, act, and design in ADF’s performing arts camp! Campers will have the opportunity to develop choreography, create characters, and learn about what goes on behind-the-scenes during a performance.

Each day, students will need:

  • Comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows for a full range-of-movement
  • Bag lunch
  • Water bottle

CLASS LINE-UP

Jazz/Theater Dance with Courtney Owen-Muir:
Students will warm up by exploring basic elements of dance and choreography such as shape, rhythm, gesture, and tempo. We will explore the idea of using movement for expression and storytelling, as well as how to relate music to movement.

Yes and… YouBetchaUhHuhTotallyOhYeah: Theatre Improvisation with Jessica Hudson
With a primary focus on improvisation we will use exercises to explore ensemble work, character building, relationships and stage pictures.  Every day includes ensemble games, group projects as well as solo work.  For this class, learning is game-based and simultaneously focused and fun.

Puppets and Masks with Amelia Freeman-Lynde
Help your performance tell a story through puppetry and masks! We’ll learn the history of different traditions, practice movement, and create our own works of art in this hands-on session.

Inside/Out with Chris Yon
Games, strategies and methods for making dances by yourself, with a partner, and in a group.  Through imagination and improvisation we will investigate physical concepts and invent sweet dance moves.  After a week of workshopping, we will share and discuss your unique and unexpected creations.

Outside/In: Character Study with Taryn Griggs
Through writing exercises and improvisations we will develop several Movement Character Studies.  While working throughout the week to clarify each character’s unique movement vocabulary we will also pay attention to the physicality involved in transitioning from one to the next.  We will use the material we create as the basis for longer improvisations and short compositional studies.

Camp runs from 9a-3p daily, with before and after care available for a small additional fee.

Price: $300 per student*
*Additional $50/household for early drop-off (8-8:30am) and late pick-up (3:30-4pm) for the duration of camp

Scholarships available. More info here.
