Dates: June 1 - July 27, 2009 (the dates of some internships may vary)
Due to the intense nature of the ADF season, most internships require evening and weekend work. All interns must be available to work opening and closing weekends.
Location: The ADF is held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The studios and administrative offices are spread across the Georgian-style campus. Performances by visiting dance companies occur in Reynolds Industries Theater on West Campus and the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.
Benefits:
“My experience as a press intern at the ADF was invaluable. Most of all, it helped me obtain my current position in fundraising and marketing with a non-profit dance organization.” –Shellie Aldridge (ADF Intern 2003), currently the Development & Communications Coordinator at the Children’s Dance Foundation of Alabama
ADF interns benefit from the Festival’s position as creative laboratory and a magnet for national and international exchange. Students and community members interact directly with luminaries in the field, learning first-hand from those who define modern dance. All interns may take one class through the ADF Six Week School, which includes more than 40 classes a day. Additional benefits include:
One complimentary ticket to each program in the ADF season, which features 50 performances by the best dance companies from around the world.
Access to the ADF photographic, film and video archival collections, which span more than 70 years of modern dance history.
Invitations to panel discussions with artists and scholars, seminars, lectures and informal showings throughout the summer.
Access to screenings of films selected as part of Dancing for the Camera: International Festival of Film and Video Dance.
Participation in a weekly seminar on relevant issues in the arts with guest speakers, including arts council members, representatives of funding organizations, critics/reporters, public relations/marketing professionals, and ADF board, staff and faculty members.
Additional activities are available as work schedules permit.
Staff Supervision: The internship program is directed by Cynthia Wyse, Director of Finance and Administration. Each intern is supervised by the professional ADF staff member of their chosen department. ADF maintains a permanent year-round staff of twelve that expands as the summer season approaches.
Academic Credit:
ADF will work with the intern’s college/university to arrange academic credit for the internship, if desired.
Stipend: All interns receive a stipend.
