Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company &
Trisha Brown Dance Company

Saturday, June 14
1 pm in Page Auditorium

The Ririe-Woodbury Company shows the power of illusion and imagination with Alwin Nikolais’ Tent (1968), on a shared program with the Trisha Brown Dance Company’s Accumulation (1971) and Spanish Dance (1973).

Featuring a large tent that transforms throughout the piece into cave, cocoon, and canopy, Tent is a fun and magical work perfect for young audiences. This special and single performance of Tent at the Children’s Matinee is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpiece: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Trisha Brown’s Accumulation offers a lesson in algebra as a dancer adds one gesture to another. Brown’s Spanish Dance, set to music by Bob Dylan, offers a slowly moving study in the possibilities of traveling across the stage.

The Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company performance of Tent was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpiece: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Pilobolus

Pilobolus

Saturday, June 21
1 pm in Page Auditorium

From playbill to performance, kids will learn that Pilobolus is not only a dance company but also a sun-loving fungus that grows in pastures. With colorful works like Pseudopodia (1974), Walklyndon (1971), and Lanterna Magica (2008) on the roster, this special afternoon will surely show kids the joy of somersaults and movement. This unique matinee lineup, differing from the weekend’s evening performances, takes place in conjunction with ADF Community Day and gives audiences the chance to see two more works by this exciting company.

Pseudopodia, a solo set to an all-percussion score, inspires with phenomenal feats of balance. Walklyndon is a silent dance that draws from the physical humor of slapstick and vaudeville. Lanterna Magica, the new full company work choreographed by Pilobolus Co-Artistic Director Michael Tracy, immerses us in the luminous spirit of the natural world.

Paul Taylor & Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

Saturday, July 5
1 pm in Page Auditorium

Over the holiday weekend, the ADF celebrates valuable pieces of modern dance history with Paul Taylor’s 3 Epitaphs (1956) and Promethean Fire (2002) and the Aspen Sante Fe Ballet’s rendering of Twyla Tharp’s Sinatra Suite (1984). With Taylor’s choreography, costumes by Robert Rauschenberg, and Early New Orleans jazz and Southern American Folk Music, 3 Epitaphs has become an American dance staple. Promethean Fire similarly impresses with music by J.S. Bach, set and costumes by Santo Loquasto, and lighting design by Jennifer Tipton. Tharp’s Sinatra Suite is a duet set to songs by Frank Sinatra with original costume designs by Oscar de la Renta.

Aspen Sante Fe Ballet

These one-hour performances begin at 1 pm in Page Auditorium.

Kids Night Out
With the purchase of an adult ticket to any ADF evening performance, you can bring a young adult, ages 6–16, for free. In order to provide an affordable way to introduce young people to a more complete range of modern dance, Kids Night Out (KNO) will include all evening performances in 2008.

A limited number of KNO tickets will be available for each performing company. As some programs may contain adult themes or nudity, the purchase of KNO tickets is left to the discretion of parents and guardians. Programs with known adult content will be noted.
