Program: Battleground
ADF-Commissioned World Premiere | ADF Debut
Tickets: $35
In its genre-defying Battleground, Black Label Movement literally plows through 10 inches of tilled soil to examine the concept, energies, and consequences of the incessant armed conflicts that the United States has fought since World War II – America’s Forever War.
Inspired by President Eisenhower’s prophetic warning against the Military Industrial Complex, Black Label Artistic Director Carl Flink utilizes scientific research and the company’s exhilarating physical-impact technique to place a magnifying glass on the ethical and physical implications of glorifying military power and violence.
Inviting intentional examination of perpetual violence and aggression and its pervasive role in present-day American society, Battleground demands audience members reflect upon its consequences while seeking empathy for the humans who must prosecute and survive it.
Premiering in October 2024 at a specially designed location built on a farm on the outskirts of Durham, North Carolina, Battleground has been commissioned by the American Dance Festival and supported by a 2022 MAP Fund grant, with additional funding from the University of Minnesota’s Imagine Fund and Grant-in-Aid programs.
