In Cunningham Technique, we won’t just be making shapes. We will be, but we will also be seeking out the possibilities of movement, finding those fleeting moments that are the experience of dance. Cunningham Technique develops clarity, strength, and flexibility in both the body and mind. Spatial awareness is gained by implementing sharp changes of direction within a single phrase, where any point in space can be the dancers’ front. Various parts of the body move simultaneously in multiple directions while a variety of meter and tempo are given throughout the class to build a foundation for rhythmic precision and dynamic movement. In this class, we will focus on the foundational exercises that are the building blocks of Merce’s bold dance vocabulary and also travel through space, finding elements of risk and abandon.
