After receiving a Fulbright to research dance in the Netherlands in 2000, Kelly Hirina stayed for twenty years to work with many freelance choreographers such as Liat Waysbort (Batsheva) and Dylan Newcomb (NDT) and in companies such as ICKamsterdam (Emio Greco/Pieter C. Scholten) and Dansgroep Amsterdam (Krisztina de Châtel). She also worked in mime/theater with Jakop Ahlbom and Compagnietheater and in dancefilms with directors Arno Dierickx and Noud Heerkens. To support her dance/theater career, she completed an acting intensive at the Atlantic Theatre School in New York City.
After being introduced to Countertechnique in the early 2000s, she completed the teacher training in 2020 after receiving her M.F.A. from the University of Michigan. Kelly is also certified to teach Double Skin/Double Mind (DS/DM), a method created by Emio Greco. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University where she teaches both techniques, choreography, and improvisation. Beyond dance, Kelly is also a fully certified Pilates and Vinyasa Yoga instructor.
