Participants check-in 10:00 AM–12:00 PM on their arrival date. Participants should plan to arrive to ADF to check-in at Gilbert-Addoms Residence Hall, located at 1368 Campus Dr., Durham, NC on Duke University’s East Campus, where the ADF summer administrative offices are located.

At check-in, participants receive their check-in packet, finalized intensive schedules, ADF/Duke ID card, a prepaid ADF T-Shirt (paid by May 10), dorm housing information and key if living on-campus, parking pass, and will resolve any outstanding student form or billing matters. Late Arrivals: ADF strongly encourages participants to arrive during the designated check-in time, but understands that extenuating circumstances may arise. Participants unable to arrive by 12:00 PM must notify the ADF School at school@americandancefestival.org as soon as possible so arrangements can be made. Late arrivals may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Fees will not be prorated for participants who arrive late to the festival.

Departure Dates:

Workshop for Creative Process | Liz Lerman: Sunday, June 25

Workshop for Educators | Gerri Houlihan: Saturday, July 2

Participants may leave at any time during their program’s specified departure date, but on-campus residents must check out of their dorm by 11:00 AM. Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke Prevention

Durham summers are hot! Click the links below to inform yourself about potentially harmful consequences of exercising in the heat. Take note of the symptoms, prevention methods, and steps of action.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat Stroke

Best forms of prevention:

  • Drink lots of fluids (water, electrolytes, etc.)
  • Stay nourished
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing
  • Take notice of the hottest parts of the day and your own body temperature

 Best steps of action:

  • If possible, move person into a cooler environment (i.e. into the shade)
  • Attempt to decrease body temperature by pouring or spraying cool liquids
  • Drink water or cool liquids, especially sports drinks that contain electrolytes

If necessary, call 911 for the Durham Police or (919) 684-2444 for the Duke Police. Notify the school staff by calling Gilbert-Addoms at (919) 684-6402 or send someone to Gilbert-Addoms for help after 911 has been called.

Gender Neutral Bathrooms

All-Gender Bathrooms in ADF-Relevant Spaces

ADF believes in inclusion and fairness, which includes the right for each individual to access public facilities according to their gender as opposed to their biological sex. All-gender bathrooms exist in some, but not all classrooms and performance spaces. Wherever male/female facilities are the only options available, ADF honors the right for students, faculty, and staff to choose the facility that makes them most comfortable. We acknowledge that this is an imperfect situation and hope that the campuses that ADF occupies will prioritize updating their facilities to be fully inclusive.
