This is a continuation of my “Embodying History Through Movement Project”. This project reflects on different times in history from the 1800’s to the present time in history.

Tony Johnson’s recent residency at ADF’s Scripps Studios to support the creative process for “Embodying History Through Movement Project” was funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Tony Johnson Choreographer/Activist

Dancer and Choreographer/ Activist, Tony C. Johnson, has performed in and choreographed over 300 dances, many of them focused on spirituality and movement. He has danced in works with world renowned choreographers such as Clay Taliaferro, Chuck Davis & Anna Halprin, and has been a frequent participant at the ADF for over 40 years, studying with Betty Jones for twenty. He is also a longtime friend of the Duke Dance Program.

He just recently returned to Durham to continue his work making dances & advocating for the poor, homeless, and people living marginal lives. He is bridging communities through movement.

He just finished working with David Mayer on a documentary of his life and work and how spiritually plays a major role.

Today he is creating a new work that will be shown in the spring titled: “Silence”, reflecting on some of the major challenges America has faced over the last four years.
